Growing up being a Blerd was never socially acceptable. The Black community would criticize me for being “a weird” nerd the nerd community would criticize me for cosplaying my favorite characters “because they aren’t Black”. Both identities were never allowed to flourish—that is, until Dream Con.
Being a Girly Pop at Dream Con 2026
As a newcomer to conventions, I am learning that there are niche subspaces for those who aren’t into mainstream or active fandoms. These subspaces get even more niche when you add the intersectionality of being a black woman. At Dream Con, I was happy to find ample activations, panels, and events that aligned with my specific so-called dormant interests!
Animation, Comics, and Manga Collide at Dream Con 2026
More than 45,000 attendees joined in celebration of nerd-culture at Dream Con 2026, hosted at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, Texas. With a stacked programming that encompassed comics, animation, cosplay, gaming, and even mental health, finding a niche to network and learn from was incredibly easy.
Gigi Murakami: Queen of Horror Manga
Award-winning Manga Artist & Illustrator, Gigi Murakami, was among the select official talent to this year’s Dream Con. Notable for horror titles such as Resenter, published digitally by Viz Manga, Murakami discussed her love of all things scary, getting the elderly into horror, and reflecting on her accolades and projects.
