A kingdom, a family and a legacy lost and fallen! And from here we find a story of legend ready to take the mantle.
Legend of Kyyden, written, lettered and edited by Jesse Wolfe and the cover, pencils, inks and colors are done by Noah Mchan, brings a story of sorcery, mythology, and accepting destiny as it was foretold in a fun story for all ages.
Legend of Kyyden writer, Wolfe, begins this tale with a quick synopsis of the lore thus far in which a far off kingdom named Sol-ar and its ruling family the Setos have been ousted and exiled and from this have ventured and tried to restart a peaceful life or so they thought, and from there is quick to the draw as it hones in on young hero Dimitri Seto. A brash and adventurous heir to a legacy he does not know quite yet. Greeted in the background and looming ever so is a shadow force with a penchant for dark magic and a grudge to settle it seems. Known only as eclipse they seek a powerful artifact to conquer the world as they see fit!
Although this issue does not start out with a magnitude of world building, you can tell from Dimitri’s interaction with his father and mother and the secrets they hold that a much bigger story is at play. They constantly talk of prophecy and to be ready to receive the artifact that has been passed down through the family and a key to the Sol-ar kingdom power and history before they were driven out.
The story does stay rather ambiguous with the reasons behind this power and what it means or even how to use it but it definitely draws the reader in making them ask why. It would have been nice to get more back story in this inaugural issue so going forward the journey could be the main focus.
Legend of Kyyden shows readers the sense of dichotomy between this former faction of Sol-ar and the dark eclipse forces hinting at a much deeper mythology that will be revealed in later issues. In the scenes with the eclipse we can see an army that feeds on darkness and harnesses it to bring destruction, attacking and moving by night and darkness itself. Where the people and royal family of sol-ar are always seen during the day praising morality and hard work, believing in a simple but rich life.
Mchan’s art is a bit grainy at times and some stark colors with some slight inconsistency with line sharpness and refinement did detract a little from the story but really excelled in the showcase fo the world. From drawing mythical animals and shadow demons to a mysterious crypt which housed the artifact it was and impressive array that was presented.
Legend of Kyyden is an intriguing story set in a whimsical-yet-serious high fantasy world that shows a penchant for creatures, magic and the rise of a hero to combat the dark forces of eclipse. Although there could be some technical refinements, this was an easy read that anyone of any age could pick up and begin the journey with Dimitri!
