SDCC Makes Its European Debut in Málaga
Written by Rossano D’Angelo
For the first time in its history, San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) has stepped beyond the borders of California and the United States, landing on the sunny coast of Málaga, Spain. SDCC Málaga 2025 marked a historic moment for fans across Europe, bringing the iconic celebration of comics, pop culture, film, and television to a brand-new audience.
The event transformed the city into a vibrant hub of creativity, featuring panels with renowned creators, exclusive previews of upcoming films and series, a cosplay contest, an interesting artist alley, and a host of interactive experiences.
SDCC Málaga offered fans a wide range of activities and experiences to dive into. Attendees could enjoy engaging panels with creators and special guests, explore the Toy Story 30th Anniversary installation, and browse the expansive collector hall filled with “hot toys” statues.
One of the standout attractions was the Marvel Infinity Saga showroom, which showcased original, full-scale props from the Marvel films. Visitors had the rare chance to see pieces such as the Infinity Gauntlet—valued at 25 million euros—alongside Loki’s original scepter, Doctor Strange’s Eye of Agamotto, and the Power Orb.
Adding to the atmosphere, an outdoor DJ set kept the energy high, blending the world of pop culture with the lively spirit of Málaga’s nightlife.
Each day of the convention was packed with panels that gave fans the chance to hear directly from actors, creators, and industry insiders.
On Thursday, the opening day, Hall M hosted Walking the Line, a discussion featuring actors Luke Evans, Aaron Paul, and Pedro Alonso. The trio shared the stage to answer questions about their most memorable roles, from The Hobbit to Breaking Bad and La Casa de Papel, offering fans both behind the scenes anecdotes and reflections on their careers.
On the same day, fans of graphic novels gathered for The Reinvention of Fear: Contemporary Horror in Comics. Moderated by Javier Pulido, the panel featured acclaimed comic artists Werther Dell’Edera, Álvaro Martínez Bueno, Martin Simmonds, and Fernando Blanco. Together, they discussed their work in shaping modern horror comics, sharing insights into how the genre continues to evolve and captivate readers.
These two panels were just the tip of the iceberg. Across the four days, SDCC Málaga featured a wealth of discussions that brought together some of the biggest names in cinema and comics. Fans had the chance to see Marvel’s Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski share insights about the future of the Marvel Universe, legendary artist and DC Comics Chief Creative Officer Jim Lee talk about his creative journey, and Hollywood icons like Antonio Banderas and Arnold Schwarzenegger light up the stage with stories from their careers.
That said, the event was not without its challenges. Several instances of overcrowding and queue mismanagement were reported, with many attendees expressing frustration over the complex queuing system and the long waits to enter panels or even the exhibit hall.
As the first edition, it’s natural that organizing an event of this scale would come with a few hiccups but the SDCC organizers can be proud of what they have achieved. With the feedback gathered this year, they are well-positioned to improve the experience and deliver an even better SDCC Málaga next year.
The team of Pages and Panels would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the SDCC Málaga press organizers for the incredible opportunity they have given us for attending the event, and to the people of Málaga for an unforgettable weekend in their beautiful city that was filled with fans and cosplayers.
