Small Press Comics at Comicpalooza
Comicpalooza may bring heavy hitters from the comic scene like Gail Simone, but that doesn’t meant there isn’t tons of talent from local creators.
This year showcased more than 15 small press creators whose love of sequential art was on full display.
Whether it was creators working on their own universe or telling unique stories, it wasn’t hard to find a new “must read.”
Check out some of the creators we were able to interview, including a local school celebrating talent from students who very well may turn into the next big thing in comics.
Several writers were kind enough to share a bit about their works and what they hope readers get from the experience.
“We’re Unearthly Comics, an independent comic publisher. We create indie horror and thriller titles and we’re psyched to get people interested in independent comics and pick up stuff from creators that may live next door.”

“We’ve been into comics since we were 15 years old. We kept putting it on the back burner but 20 years later, we’re doing it. We’ve created an entire universe centered around characters who work to stop human trafficking.”

“We’re the Woodlands High School Comics Club and we have been together since 2017. Every year we work with students to create an original anthology that is completely student-made. We then get to come to Comicpalooza where they get to practice tabling at a convention and even talk with other professionals.”

“My series focuses on a hero named Terrell who lives in a world where powers are inherited. After saving his friend, he becomes an outlier and suddenly powers are activated. Where the drama comes in is how I talk about consequences that we all face when we put ourselves in situations we maybe shouldn’t have.”
