The potential of youth and how to make the most of it, a question asked by the families in You’ll Never Leave This Place Alive #1 and the burden their children must bear.
Phoebe “Phee” Joplin and her friends have never seen the outside world. All they know is each other, their families, and the small glimpses they receive from disobeying their parents to interact with the strangers who drive by. The lives they lead are free from the chaos of the outside world, and that is by design. Their parents have given them everything and ask for everything in return.
Pacing and characterization are where this comic truly shines. The world that the Hivemind (Kelly and Lanzing) created being strangely cozy to deeply unsettling in the best way. Teenage antics and their familiar feeling, all with a constant undertone of impending horror. The buildup is a slow-burn but always engaging. The kids feel real and are so evocative of what makes being a teenager feel so riddled with potential.
Vaughan’s style is built for horror, energetic but still captures eerie stillness when needed. The limited pallet on each page works fantastically, soft pastels with their calmness perfectly flowing into vibrancy exactly when it counts. Sketchy lines and lively inks are perfect for the setting, danger comes from all angles.
The children were all raised with the promise of ascension after graduation. Never told what it was, readers will come to agree it is less favorable than the normal graduation present of a car or new computer. To make it even worse, Phoebe’s homeschool sweetheart is the least lucky of them all.
