Like a house of curiosity where each page lays one intriguing brick after another, Roots of Madness is another stellar debut for Ignition Press. This comic utilizes the topic of natural medicines as a way to show the importance of generational knowledge—especially against malevolent forces.
Written by Stephanie Williams, intrigue is the core element of this story. Readers are introduced to Etta and her parents when she is an eager child wanting to learn all of her mother’s medicinal recipes, and the narrative shifts to an older and capable Etta who uses her chemistry knowledge to help heal her community.
Williams’ skills are on full display as the sharp script balances world building and tension throughout the various characters that interact with Etta. This issue is filled with deeply personal moments, and while Etta is always surrounded by ingredients and glass vessels used for concocting medicines, each interaction adds depth to her character while showcasing her rich understanding of natural remedies.
Illustrating this story is Letizia Cadonici and her use of shadow and atmosphere works incredibly well with this story. Combined with colors by Alessandro Santoro, this comic has a warm and caring visual tone. Despite the modest beginnings of Etta, early pages are filled with loving and intimate discussions that fill the room. Once the plot shifts by 15 years into the future, the emotions—especially in the eyes of characters—keep the connection of Etta’s purpose to heal those in need as it shows readers what is at stake.
This series premiere lays a strong foundation both in its story and visuals and by the last page readers will be eagerly waiting for issue #2.
Final Verdict
Roots of Madness #1 wonderfully blends culture and fantasy for a captivating and emotional read. Its connection to the lost art of remedies from generations past reminds readers of the deeper meanings of the knowledge we share and the beauty in how they keep us connected.
