Following in the footsteps of issue #2, News From the Fallout #3 sees writer Chris Condon continue to explore the characters’ backstories, using the same narrative device of shifting between “before” and “after” the bomb.

The story opens with Charlie and Nance chatting in front of Old Joe's Diner, which, before the bomb, was a peaceful yet isolated place. It’s clear they care about each other, but little else is revealed. When the narration jumps forward to the events after the bomb, the diner is no longer a safe haven. Infected Irene is about to break in, and Joe, with his rifle in hand, seems to be their only hope for survival. Killing Irene appears to be the only solution - but Rob complicates things. Then, a single shot is fired… and hell breaks loose.

Meanwhile, at a gas station presumably not far from Atomic Alley and the diner, General Sheridan McCoy confronts the station’s owner, preaching about his divine mission and claiming he’s been chosen to deliver the message of a new dawn for humanity.

As the plot grows more complex and additional characters are introduced, Jeffrey Alan Love’s minimalist art style can make it challenging at times to follow every detail. That said, his bold use of sharp lines and dark tones perfectly matches the bleak, oppressive atmosphere of the story.

Final Verdict

News From the Fallout #3 marks a turning point in the narrative. The survivors are no longer safe, and now they must face the world outside Old Joe's Diner. While the minimalist artwork may make the story feel confusing at times, the bigger picture is still unfolding, and the truth behind it all is yet to be revealed.
