There’s something refreshing in the way Beast of Borikén tackles social issues. The method in which this story combines raw commentary with fantasy elements is incredibly clever as it balances both genres in its discussion gentrification and land theft.
In fact, it spends so much of its time putting the issue of disparity in Puerto Rico at the forefront, that it’s easy to forget this comic has a monster lurking about. And that’s the beauty in its design.
Beast of Borikén blends monsters and social commentary set against the backdrop corporate takeover happening in Puerto Rico. It plays with different themes, and the creative team behind this comic clearly know how to make every page count in a series premiere as every bit of dialogue and scene feels intentional and well-designed..
Writer and Co-Creator Julio Anta knows how to hook readers and give them a protagonist to root for. Loli Flores isn’t someone who needs to be reminded of bravery and using one’s voice. Rather she is determined in her fight against corporations that destroy and corrupt.
What creates a unique plot point is the monster that she witnesses one evening as a child during a hurricane. It’s a beast that as of issue one, has no agenda or identified goal, but it lurks, and nearly ten years later has returned during a stand off between protestors and construction workers at the site of a new resort.
The illustrations from Co-Creator Daniel Irizarri are impressive in every panel as the attention to detail is consistent whether it’s a heated debate in a small radio room or scenes along the water as buildings and trees shake against the island's winds. Colorist Patricio Delpeche elevates each panel with color palettes that playfully include green throughout the issue that serves as a visual reminder of the monster that has never truly gone away, but is simply waiting to make its appearance.
As to what the creature truly represents has yet to be seen. And that is part of the intrigue of this comic. As readers follow Loli’s journey, there is plenty to capture one’s attention that by the final crescendo of mayhem and bullets, it’s easy to wonder what’s next and be reminded, this is only the beginning.
Final Verdict
Beast of Borikén #1 is an unapologetically bold monster story. Rather than shy away from confrontation, this series takes a stand in its message while delivering a compelling story.
